Tanzania’s Connectivity Surge
In early 2022, Tanzania was at an inflection point. While internet penetration remained relatively modest, the foundations for a major digital leap were being laid. According to Digital 2022 data, only about 25 percent of the population were using the internet at the start of the year, translating to roughly 15.6 million people. The median mobile connection speed was around 10.89 Mbps, and fixed lines averaged 9.66 Mbps.
Part of the reason for slower fixed‑line adoption was geography. Much of Tanzania’s population is spread across rural areas, making last‑mile fibre deployment commercially difficult. Despite these constraints, government strategy and private investment were beginning to shift the landscape.
By mid‑2024, internet subscriptions rose from 39.3 million to 41.4 million, driven largely by mobile broadband. Fixed broadband also showed growth, particularly fibre‑to‑the‑home connections.
The expansion was not just technical but social. Millions of Tanzanians are using the internet for education, business, and mobile payments. Policy reforms continue to support investment in infrastructure, particularly in underserved areas.
However, challenges remain. Rural deployment remains costly, and innovative approaches such as TV white‑space broadband may help bridge the gap.
Conclusion
By 2022, Tanzania was gradually closing its connectivity gap, supported by mobile broadband growth and steady fibre rollout.
